So let's start out first with west Africa, you were born out in west Africa.

What part

so I wasn't born in west Africa.

Christopher Marciano: 00:03:55

I was actually born in Rhode Island which is up north.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:01

It's a very, very small place.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:02

I was born Pawtucket.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:03

My family's from west Africa.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:05

I had the opportunity of traveling there and they're from Cape Verde islands.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:09

Not many people know what cape Verde islands consists of but it's

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:13

actually little bits of islands off of the west African coast

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:19

and it's absolutely beautiful.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:21

It's very rural.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:22

I wouldn't go there too often because of just how rural it is,

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:27

but it's, it's a beautiful place and they have phenomenal waters.

So my family, a little by little migrated from there, uh, in order to just find a

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:35

better place to raise their children and find a better place to live their lives.

My mother is actually from Ivory Coast, Africa, and, uh, her

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:45

family migrated over as well.

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:48

So as I was just surrounded by so many different cultures in Africa.

And I acquired different languages, such as Cape Verdean,

Christopher Marciano: 00:04:57

which is my first language.

My mom spoke.

Christopher Marciano: 00:05:00

I know my mom spoke fluent French.

Christopher Marciano: 00:05:02

My mom speaks by the way, just, just to add that little tidbit, my mom

speaks five different languages.

Good for her.

Good for her bad for me, because I grew up like a little confused.

Christopher Marciano: 00:05:15

And when she was upset, she knew how to say it in five different languages.

So that that just caused a struggle for me going to school because

of just natural language barrier.

So, Cape Verde, I'm just getting into like a whole history lesson.

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:00

Cape Verde was actually colonized by the Portuguese.

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:05

Yes.

So my language is composed of Portuguese and African dialect, so

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:10

I could understand Portuguese, but when I speak it, it's a hot mess.

Catherine: 00:06:16

Oh, interesting.

Can you read Portuguese?

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:20

I can, I can read Spanish pretty well.

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:22

I'm not quite sure how that happened and I could speak Spanish pretty well.

Not sure how that happened either.

But Portuguese it's, it's very similar to my language so I could read it, uh,

grammatically, they, they moved their words differently than, the accent is a

little bit more predominant pronounced.

So, uh, but I could, I could understand that pretty.

Yeah.

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:43

Yeah.

now you were living in Rhode Island, which is where you schooled.

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:47

Yeah.

So I went to over 12 different schools.

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:51

I know I moved around quite quite so many times and when I was in

Christopher Marciano: 00:06:56

school or naturally, because I wasn't consistently in school, they put me in

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:00

a speech class because I was just very

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:02

quiet younger child.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:04

And they thought they were helping me by doing that.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:08

But I actually felt a little disconnected from my classmates

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:11

because they were pulling me out of class to work with me on my language

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:16

and then putting me back into class.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:18

And when I came back, I just didn't have the opportunity to develop

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:22

relationships within the classroom.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:25

So that caused me to shut down a little bit more.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:28

And that's when I turned into writing, instead of expressing my emotions

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:33

through my words, I wrote it down just so that I could get that outlet.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:38

And that's where my writing began.

Catherine: 00:07:41

I really appreciate that you talked about how you felt in school

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:47

there's some cases where students will have to,

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:50

you know, receive services, whether it's an exceptional education.

Christopher Marciano: 00:07:54

However, I feel like the relationship between the teacher who is pulling out the

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:00

student and the actual classroom teacher needs to be very tight because together,

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:07

you established that comfortable feeling where when the student comes back, we're

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:12

able to communicate and welcome that student into their classroom family

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:16

where they, they don't feel left out.

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:20

Because when I went to a stranger, I was never introduced to them.

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:24

Didn't know their names.

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:25

I'm working with this person who is pulling me from

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:28

class and I don't know them.

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:31

Whereas with me, when I was a teacher, I introduced those people

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:35

to my students and made sure that they knew, Hey, we're working

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:39

together to give you what you need.

Christopher Marciano: 00:08:41

So that just made them feel comfortable.

And I felt like that's what, that's what was missing when I was younger.

I mean, not great that that was missing, but that's, that's so

great that you recognized it.

You were able to implement that.

So how did, when you were reading coach, how did that fall into place?

Did the teachers accept your openness.

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:09

Oh, of course not all the time.

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:14

I mean, I I'm very personable, so I have great relationships with

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:18

my teachers, but of course you have certain situations where some

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:21

students are the ones I call them

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:24

the ones that need the most love they could trust some limits, but we just

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:29

have to find creative ways to like music creative ways to really reach them.

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:35

So when I was a reading coach, I absolutely love it because I was

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:39

able to go into the classroom and model how we could do that and with

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:42

my background as being the Dean and behavior and academics go side by side.

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:47

So I was able to come in regularly and with a student and show them,

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:51

Hey, If you try these strategies, the student may be able to be a little more

Christopher Marciano: 00:09:56

comfortable and understand the concept that you're trying to deliver to them.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:00

So it's all about thinking outside the box.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:03

And really getting to know the student and reaching them and their

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:07

interest level in a inappropriate way.

Catherine: 00:10:10

Yes, definitely the interest level.

And so you mentioned you were Dean also, what grade level were

Catherine: 00:10:16

you working with with regard?

Catherine: 00:10:17

Was it still element

the whole school.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:20

It was pre-K to fifth grade was the toughest year of my life.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:27

Pre-K to fifth grade.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:28

And I had we had a unit, several units at my school.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:32

So several exceptional needs students.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:35

I learned the most, it was my first year out of the classroom.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:38

I lasted the entire year and I developed an amazing amount of relationships with

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:45

these kids and the teachers and parents.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:47

I was very close with my parents because you need to have parents by your side.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:51

And that just really molded me.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:54

into the leader that I am now so it's something I keep thinking of.

Christopher Marciano: 00:10:59

It's very rewarding.

Catherine: 00:11:01

When you decided to go into teaching, how old or did you always know

Catherine: 00:11:06

you wanted to go into teaching?

Catherine: 00:11:08

No, you're shaking your head.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:11

Every my family, my mom still is just like, I can't believe

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:14

you went this route because here I am a Cape Verdean boy, who has grown up going

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:19

to so many different schools struggling in school and I become a teacher.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:23

I always loved school.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:25

Don't get me wrong.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:26

I loved going to school.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:28

However, I went to school for biology.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:31

I was going to be a doctor.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:32

I always knew I was going to be pediatrician.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:34

I've always loved kids.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:36

So there was that connection.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:38

I took my prerequisites for med school.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:41

I got all of that done and I was ready to go and be a doctor.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:46

And unfortunately I had a tough situation where and I don't talk so much about

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:52

this, but you are just a positive person, so I can definitely share it.

Christopher Marciano: 00:11:56

But I worked at a resort where I did activities with the kids . , a little one

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:03

who was swimming in the pool with her mom and dad, and went under the water and.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:09

Didn't drown, but was unconscious.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:12

So I pulled her out of the water and tilted her to the side and the water

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:16

came out of her mouth, but I was apprehensive about giving her CPR.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:21

So a guest in the water gave her CPR.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:24

But since that moment, I kind of, you know, was hard on myself

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:28

because I said, if I couldn't

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:30

give her CPR in that moment, how can I be a doctor?

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:33

And even though they built me up so much, because they said, if you didn't

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:36

tilt her to the side and the water didn't come out of her mouth, you did

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:39

what you were supposed to do, but I still felt like I should have done more.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:44

And she's alive.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:44

She's well, like, you know, thanks to God.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:47

But in that moment I was like, oh, I can't be a doctor.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:50

So I went home.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:51

And I opened the college catalog and I was like, what else can I do in this world?

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:57

And just fell on the elementary education.

Christopher Marciano: 00:12:59

I was like, why I like kids.

Christopher Marciano: 00:13:01

I could be a teacher.

Christopher Marciano: 00:13:02

And I literally that following day I went to my university and changed my major.

Christopher Marciano: 00:13:08

Elementary education.

Christopher Marciano: 00:13:10

What a story?

Oh my goodness.

And yet don't be hard on yourself our minds do different things in our actions.

We do different things at different

I mean, if we, if we could all go back in time, there'll be one thing

by, we just take what happened and then learn from them and grow.

That was kind of a long time

But that day haunts me so much because you know, you always

have those thoughts and, and I'm not too hard on myself now,but it took quite some

time for me to find a positive positivity somewhere else to assure myself, okay,

you did and what you could in that moment.

I mean, all teachers, I listen, I commend them.

And my first year of teaching was such a great one.

It was not the horror stories that everybody would.

My first few years of teaching were pretty great.

Was always that teacher that thought outside of the box, you would come

into my, and I was probably standing on my desk doing crazy accents, for my

students, my students were probably on the floor rolling, laughing, but we had,

you know, our time where we had fun.

And we had our times that we worked, we worked, we worked,

we worked, my class was top 10%.

They had top 10% in Florida, also the top 10% teacher in Florida for

reading and math two years in a row.

I wish I could tell you I did everything that they told me to

do, but I literally had to think outside of the box and learn my kids.

I took so much time to really learning each and every single

one of my students to reach them.

And in ways that I wish I was reached when I was younger, and

that was crucial and important.

and I've seen students who were so low and who have flourished to

who they are today, and it excites me because I know kids can do it.

We just need to set that bar up above their head and not....

The lower the bar is set, then they that's all they'll do.

And that's the same with us, you know, as adults.

You know, so we need something to strive for.

mediocrity.

And we won't push ourselves unless they, someone has set that bar for us.

And I, I keep in touch with so many of them today.

You know, when they're getting married, they're having kids,

they're starting careers.

it, but I, I cry a little bit.

I spend to keep in touch with them and see what they're doing.

But one of the things that you do is music.

Some, I'm an artist.

I've been a songwriter.

Actually I started as a songwriter for several years and I just wrote for

other people, everything I write is about an experience that I went through.

So I wasn't comfortable being, you know, at the forefront.

I just wanted everybody else to sing my song.

So I was like, okay, here, here's a song.

Christopher Marciano: 00:16:55

You sing using my pain, using my happiness, as long as I'm

getting it out there to everyone.

Christopher Marciano: 00:17:01

It was my therapy.

Like I, if I had.

An argument with a friend.

I went straight to my notebook and started writing and felt a lot better afterwards.

So I was a songwriter for quite some time.

And then as a songwriter, and I know many songwriters out there fall in the same

Christopher Marciano: 00:17:18

path where they feel like they're helping artists a lot more than just writing.

And I love doing that.

I would give suggestions as far as, oh, you should really go with this song

Christopher Marciano: 00:17:27

and that song, or you should really try having a music video for this song.

So one of my artists one day, Said, well, how do you know you've

never been an artist before?

Christopher Marciano: 00:17:38

And I said, you are absolutely right.

So I came on this whole journey.

So we have our art, we have music, we have PE, but we don't really have electives..

She is amazing, by the way, she said it's every Wednesday, I want

kids to do something that they love.

I want it to be electives where they choose, where, what they'll do.

And I want yoga classes.

I want acting classes.

I want a music class.

There's she looked, everyone was looking at me at that moment.

She's like, oh, I figured you can help kids write music and you

So I opened up the Tigers Studios, what I call that at my school.

And I started writing songs with them.

It started out with me writing a lot of their songs, and then two

of my kids came one day and I was about to teach them their part.

And one of them said we kind of wrote something, is it

And I was a little taken aback, I was like, you wrote something and

she's like, yeah, I just wanted to see what you thought of it.

I was like, okay, okay.

I was expected to, you know, cringe and be a little nervous about it, but

the song within a few weeks.

So we had all this time on our hands and I was like, what do I do now?

And I said, all right, guys, they're all just staring at me, sitting down,

I was like, let's make a music video.

And I just know that this moment that we shared doing that experience,

And I felt like I could get there, but I was missing some things to get there.

situation that I wasn't sure how to deal with it or how to vocalize my emotions.

I'll go and write it.

As soon as I finished writing it and I finished recording it

I'm okay from that situation.

So if I was very upset about a situation, once I record that, my, my thoughts and my

emotions with that, I'm completely fine.

I don't even have to revisit it anymore.

So it's literally therapy for me because people go into therapy and, and come

out feeling better about themselves.

I'd go into the studio and come out, feeling so much

better about that situation.

And I almost get clarity with every word that I'm writing I'm gaining
