I live in Malvik, Norway which is close to the fjords. The fjords are beautiful.

I try to visualize for people on Instagram that it’s not difficult to go in the outdoors. My mission is to tell people that you can make it outdoors even with this lifestyle of work; having a job. You don’t need to be a full-time adventurer in order to have a nice experience in the woods.

Step outside of your house and look at the opportunities around you. Take the time to relax and enjoy a nice walk. The outdoors don’t have to be expensive.

You don’t need much to be in the outdoors. You can borrow items, buy used or find things around the house. Everyday can be an outdoor life. Find the opportunities nearby.

Army Imprints

(Note: The army in Norway is compulsory. It’s a conscript military meaning it’s required; however, only those men and women whom are the best skilled and motivated are selected.)

I wanted to make more of the army so I started the Non-commissioned Officer program. It was really lots of fun and I ended up spending four years in the Norwegian Army. My assignment was border patrol between Russia and Norway.

Up there at the border it is very cold.

When I was working as a Sargent I was a team commander. I trained soldiers to be border patrol. Our skills were in observations, patrolling, and learning skills in cold weather. A soldier must have the cold-weather skills to take care of oneself and fellow soldiers.

Sometimes we did border patrol with the use of snowmobiles. Our clothing was very good winter clothing such as Goretex and other really good material. All that clothing made me feel like Michelin Man.

Being active kept me from freezing.

My last year in the army I worked as a commander at a station where we were four officers and twenty-five soldiers. I really enjoyed training the soldiers.

The situation between Russia and Norway is calm so I didn’t find myself scared. Actually, much of the patrol was keeping Norwegians from passing the border into Russia and also the other way too. Illegal immigrants.

The army prepared me for real life.

Emergency Room

Getting an education beyond the army was important to me so I took a course in Germany in First-Aid training. It was something I enjoyed and so after the army I enrolled in nursing school.

I’m now in the emergency room going on three years there. I love this type of service and work. It’s not a routine so everyday is a new day for me.

My emergency room is one of the largest ones in Norway serving a population of 250,000. We aren’t a trauma emergency but rather more like a large clinic. An urgent care center.

On top of nursing I’m also in the reserves and I have many great experiences. Just in November I participated in a NATO exercise. I’m in the guard until I’m 55.Part of the school system growing up is to learn English. But I learned to speak even better English when I was part of a NATO exercise with the US Marine Corps. I spoke English for two months. The US Marines are very professional Hopefully I will get another opportunity to work with them again for another NATO exercise.

As busy as I am I still find time to be in the outdoors even if it’s a walk with my dogs. It’s important to not stay in the house but to relax outside and reflect.

Love in Cyber Space

Espen and Kine met on the Tinder App which is a dating App. When they matched up they began to talk. Kine was looking for a musher and Espen was not a musher but he is a man in uniform and that is really nice. Besides, he loves being in the outdoors and that was important to Kine.

Gjør Drømmen

— Follow Your Dream

I started mushing thirteen years ago at a school where I became an apprentice. My work is to train dogs for several dog mushers here in Norway. It was a dream of mine to train dogs. When I learned about the Iditarod in Alaska that became another dream. Training dogs for the Iditarod was something I hoped to do. It was a goal of mine.

Thirty dogs, another trainer and I went up into the far north of Norway to train for the Iditarod. Dreams turned into goals and my new goal was to see the dogs I trained at the starting line in Alaska. That was a great experience.

Robert Sørlie, a Norwegian who won the Iditarod twice was my inspiration for my dream.

Lars Monsen was whom I worked for. He is one of Norway’s dog mushing champions and he’s also competed in the Iditarod. While working for him a TV series was put together. That was another experience for me.

Right now I am taking time off. I was living in a tent during all sorts of weather and having no social life for many months while training the dogs. Espen’s and my relationship is important to me and I want to work on that.

But now the racing season has started in Norway and I am finding myself missing it also.

Gjør Drømmen is tattooed underneath my tattoo picture. I used a picture of my musher friend and her eight dogs for the tattoo. When I was only dreaming of this I decided to get the tattoo to remind me of my dream. But again, I worked hard to reach my goals and my dream.
